As pets age, they’re more prone to health issues like arthritis. As part of our senior wellness screening, we check your pet for this disease. Which body parts does arthritis affect?

We perform a joint examination to assess the body parts affected by arthritis. Pets can be affected by arthritis in different joints throughout their body but some of the most common include the hips, elbows, lower back, knees, and wrists. We highly recommend a physical examination and diagnostic testing, like X-rays, if your pet has any of the following symptoms:

• Difficulty walking
• Limping
• Stiffness
• Shying away from physical activity
• Irritability

What treatments do you recommend for arthritis?

Each pet receives individualized care according to their condition. When pets have arthritis, the cushioning between their joints wears away, causing friction between bones. Depending on the area where your pet’s joints are deteriorating, we’ll recommend a treatment plan that helps treat their condition and improve their overall quality of life. Unfortunately, arthritis isn’t curable but can be effectively managed. Common treatments include non-inflammatory prescription medications, weight management, supplements, surgery and/or physiotherapy.

How can physiotherapy help my pet cope with osteoarthritis?

Most pets can benefit from physiotherapy no matter how old they are, even if their arthritis is advanced. Rehabilitation sessions offer a safe and controlled environment for your pet that includes fun, safe and appropriate activities. We’ll work with you to create a comprehensive treatment plan, including activities we’ll do during your pet’s appointment as well as ones you can do together at home. This includes icing to reduce joint inflammation, massages to soothe sore body parts, and a range of muscle exercises to ensure your pet maintains their mobility.
